frequently asked questions
1. What is the best age to teach a child how to swim?
- Children can start developing comfort in the water as early as 6 months old through parent-and-tot classes, which focus on water play, safety, and bonding. Formal, independent swim instruction usually begins around age 3, when children are more developmentally ready to follow instructions and learn basic swimming skills.
- The earlier children are introduced to the water in a safe, positive way, the more confident and skilled they tend to become as they grow. That’s why many Canadian swim schools recommend starting young and staying consistent with lessons.
2. What is the age range for swim lessons?
- We offer swim lessons for children ages 6 months to 12 years, with programs tailored to each developmental stage and skill level.
3. What should you expect from your first swim lesson?
- The first swim lesson is all about building comfort, trust, and excitement around the water—for both you and your child. Every child responds differently. You can expect a warm welcome, gentle guidance, and a focus on basic water safety and confidence-building. We use encouraging, play-based methods to help your child feel safe and engaged. Progress doesn’t always mean perfect strokes right away—it’s about gaining familiarity and a positive association with swimming.
- Most importantly, you’ll leave that first lesson knowing your child is in caring hands, taking the first steps in a lifelong, life-saving skill. And every splash from here forward is a step toward strength and confidence.
4. What is the student-to-instructor ratio?
- We offer the smallest groups in the industry with a 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio, to ensure personalized attention and effective supervision.
5. How do you assess a child’s skill level?
- Instructors evaluate each child’s swimming ability during the first lesson by observing comfort in the water, basic skills, and coordination to place them in the right class and tailor instruction.
6. How long are the lessons?
- Each lesson is 30 minutes long—long enough to make progress while keeping children engaged and energized.
- Once the child progresses to our Pro level, lessons are 45 minutes long to build and test their endurance and strokes.
7. How do you ensure child safety during lessons?
- Your child’s safety is our top priority, and we take that responsibility to heart.
- We maintain low student-to-instructor ratios to ensure every swimmer receives close attention. Our instructors are fully certified as swim instructors lifeguards, first aid, CPR, and receive ongoing training in water safety and child supervision.
- Lessons are designed to be structured, calm, and age-appropriate, so children feel both supported and secure.
- We also encourage open communication with parents—if you ever have questions or concerns, we’re here to listen and help.
- Because when children feel safe, they grow confident—and that’s when real learning begins.

10. What kind of progress can we expect?
- Learning to swim is a journey—and while each child progresses at their own pace. With consistent weekly lessons and occasional at-home practice, you can generally expect your child to:
- Float independently and swim basic strokes within 3–6 months.
- Learn all four main strokes, water confidence, and safety practices in about 6–12 months.
- Earn structured certifications and enjoy celebratory milestones as they grow.
- Of course, individual timelines vary—and your child’s progress will depend on their age, comfort level, and practice frequency. We’re here to support them every step of the way!

16. Why should my child take swim lessons year-round?
- Swim lessons are always in season! Swim lessons are offered year-round because it helps our students maintain and improve their swimming skills and knowledge of water safety. Our perpetual lessons are also convenient as they’re provided on a schedule that works with yours. You’ll always have the option to make changes to your lesson times, if needed.
- We recommend year-round swimming lessons for children because the continuity helps them retain more knowledge for a longer period of time. With the gap created by seasonal swimming lessons, children tend to regress from their swimming skill level; this ultimately results in having to refresh those skills before they can build new skills.
